5 Great Eco Friendly Gifts - Gift Guide

by Adela Beranek on April 12, 2024

In the anticipation of this year's Earth Day (April 22) we're bringing you our one and only gift guide to locally sourced and sustainably made Good Things. In case of our shop, it's easy to point out an eco-friendly gift made or designed in what's now British Columbia, because all our Good Things are selected to be in the shop with regards to their relationship to mother Earth. In this gift guide we're going to shine our light onto 5 Good Things and explain what exactly makes them eco-friendly. Let's dive in, shall we?

We'll start with the more obvious examples like containers & clothing moving onto the less obvious ones, like home decor or jewelry.

1. Reusable Food Containers & Utensils

Reusable food containers & utensils offer a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to single-use plastic containers. By making the switch to reusable options, you can help reduce plastic waste, lower your carbon footprint, save money, and protect your health.

The food jars, lunch & snack bags we have on our virtual shelves have all been designed on the lands now called British Columbia, Canada by the company called Danica Studio and its sister brand - Now Designs. Eating your foods from containers which carry your favorite designs further enhances your meal time which is always good for your general well-being, right?

2. Reusable Shopping & Produce Bags

What makes reusable shopping bags eco friendly? Same things as for the food containers. What's more, cool reusable shopping bags with locally produced designs and art make a great statement about your values and taste. AGBC's own canvas tote is coming out soon. Stay tuned.

3. Clothing Made In Canada

Moving on to clothing. Wearing quality clothing made in Canada not only reduces your carbon foot print, but allows local companies to give jobs locally and pay taxes locally. The less travelling the final product does the better. If happy workers make it, it's a win win for all.

At AGBC we are happy to offer t-shirts by Kindred Coast, that are all made in Canada. Then we also have the limited edition hoodie made by Ambler and our own branded toques that are also made in Canada.

4. Wall Art Prints On Wood

When you hear eco-friendly home decor, what comes to your mind? Dried flowers, branches or leaves of grass in a beige vessel? We've got good news for you. Eco-friendly home decor does not have to involve messy foliage and can be colorful too. Here at AGBC we're happy to be carrying a line of various prints on wood. All the wood is either salvaged or comes from responsibly managed forests right here in "B.C."

Another thing that makes wood wall decor a great eco-friendly option for your home is its product life cycle. After it no longer serves you it's biodegradable or you can burn it with no shame. Can you do that with those wood look-a-like  knick-knacks from big buck stores? Probably not.

The image below features the "Starry Skies" image taken by "B.C." based photographer Kyle Graham at what's now Alta Lake, Whistler, BC and is printed on light birch plank wood by Vancouver Island based decor company Woodly.

5. Sterling Silver Jewelry

We all love good jewelry with some real glitz. But beware where your glam comes from and what makes it eco-friendly. Here at AGBC we strongly favor full on sterling silver jewelry that comes from responsible resources. Sure, it's a bit pricier, but what makes it special? Again, it's the product life cycle. After your favorite piece of sterling silver jewelry no longer serves you, it can be easily recycled into another awesome piece. Can you do that with silver plated, brass or gold plated stuff? We don't think so.

Here at AGBC we're happy to be carrying one of the best lines of jewelry born on these lands now called BC - the Treeline Silver Jewelry collection. Beautiful and sturdy silver rings that are also stackable. Silver necklaces with various charms and adjustable chains. And at last but not least neat little studs that come in two versions - single motif or mix& match.

AGBC as a brand has also ventured onto the jewelry territory making its own necklace with a logo pendant. It's been executed by the fabulous and one and only B.C. jewelry guru Rosie from Joie Designs. Again, both the necklace and the pendant are full on sterling silver that was sourced here in "B.C.". This unique piece of jewelry is only available on our website right now. Wishing to get compliments on an original piece of jewelry that reflets the spirit of these lands now called B.C.? Take a look.

Key take aways

When considering how green a certain gift is always think of the product life cycle. How much energy is used when making it? Where does i actually come from? Who makes it and where? What will happen to it when it stops serving me?

And at las but not least - Sustainability starts with where you buy. Shop small, shop local & feel good about it. Make every day you buy gifts an Earth day!

All The Good Things From BC is your one-stop shop for eco-friendly gits that also reflect the soul & spirit of the lands now called B.C.
